History was made on August 2018 when Novak Djokovic achieved the Career Golden Masters with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Roger Federer at the Western & Southern Open, his first career title in Cincinnati. It was the Serbian’s ninth different Masters 1000 title. The victory on Sunday came five years after his eighth different Masters 1000 event. With 31 Masters 1000 titles, Djokovic trails Nadal by two titles in the prestigious tournaments.
“Obviously it’s a very special moment to stand here for the first time with the winning trophy here in Cincinnati,” Djokovic said in front a rowdy sold-out crowd following the match.
Federer, who was 3-0 in Cincinnati finals against Djokovic, came out very flat and had an unusually high amount of unforced errors at 39 for the day. 20 of the unforced errors came off the forehand side. Federer broke to go up 2-0 in the second set, but after a shaky third game of the set, Djokovic took command and never looked back. Djokovic prevailed in one hour and 24 minutes.
“Congratulations Novak on writing history today, said Federer.” “It’s an amazing effort not just today but your whole career to get to this point. It’s an amazing achievement.”
In 46 career meetings, Djokovic now leads the head-to-head series 24-22.
Djokovic’s victory in Cincinnati gives him his 70 career tour-level singles titles and collects a winner’s check for $1,088,450 and 1,000 ATP Ranking points.
Earlier in the afternoon in the Men’s Doubles Championship, No. 4 seeded Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares defeated No. 7 seeded Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 in front of very packed crowd on the Grandstand Court.
